Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but there are a lot of things we don’t know about them! Check out 9 facts about diamonds that we found pretty neat:

1.)  The word diamond comes from the Greek “Adamas” which means “unconquerable”

2.)  Diamonds are the hardest natural substance on Earth

3.)  Diamonds can melt! (You’ll probably never see this, because it takes a whopping 6420 degrees Fahrenheit)

4.)  Diamonds are the birthstone of April babies

5.)  The earliest diamonds formed 3.3 billion years ago

6.)  250 TONS of earth are mined to produce a single one-carat diamond

7.)  Diamonds only form between 90 and 120 miles underground. (Volcanic eruptions bring them closer to the surface)

8.)  The biggest diamond in the universe is 10 Billion Trillion carats! (It is in the core of a dwarf star in outer space)

9.)  80% of diamonds that are mined are not even suitable for jewelry
